Who among us hasn’t outfitted our pet in some amusing manner, such as tying a superhero cape around its neck or clamping felt reindeer antlers on its head? Our furry friends are long-suffering in their willingness to keep us entertained. Now there’s an opportunity for the canines in our lives to be dressed up to strut their stuff in public. A woofin’ good time is planned this Saturday, October 29, when Pause Dog Boutique holds its grand Howl’oween Dog Costume Parade along the sidewalks of Rhi...

The regional zombie crisis has spread beyond the Village of Saugerties this week. The undead have taken to the skies at Big Bear Ziplines in Hyde Park, with the first-ever Zombie Ziplines nighttime event. The notion of Halloween-themed ziplining came to Big Bear Ziplines as they moved into their first autumn of operation. “Everybody comes up with things that are creepy and crawly during Halloween,” said Big Bear general manager Carolyn Beisiegel. “We came up with Zombie Ziplining, but we sa...

The American Symphony Orchestra (ASO) kicks off its 2011/12 season at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College this weekend with two performances of a concert featuring Gustav Mahler’s sumptuous Symphony No. 1 in D Major, also known as the Titan Symphony. Even if you think you don’t know Mahler, you’ll recognize the famous slow third movement: the so-called “Funeral March of the Animals,” a minor-key variation on “Frère Jacques.” Also included in the program are Ma...

As one of the earliest settlements in Ulster County, with almost 400 years of history, Huguenot Street in New Paltz has a lot of stories to tell. Ten of the most grisly tales, related to the deaths of early inhabitants, will be told by a crew of 50 or so costumed volunteers on October 28, 29 and 30 during the Haunted Huguenot Street Tour (attendance by children under 12 not recommended). Most have never been told to the public before, according to Susan Stessin-Cohn, director of exhibits, edu...

Greenwich Village, down in New York City, has its wild bacchanalian Halloween Parade each year, led by Ralph Lee’s puppets, and including more adult than kiddie wildness. And nowadays, it seems, every other town or hamlet has its own ghoulish parades – with the emphasis on kids in costumes, plus organized family events. In all fairness to everything taking place on and for All Saints’ Eve here and elsewhere, in my opinion, nothing quite matches what Woodstock conjures for young and old on O...
